Perfectly Humanly Human

Dear Rain,

I know I have some hang-ups. It's a part of being human and I believe I am more empowered seeing them for what they are. Is it better to accept yourself as "humanly flawed" and move on or apply energy to unraveling your knots? I go back and forth. Sometimes I am highly motivated to work on myself. Other times I simply want it to be ok to be me, flaws and all!

Dear Reader,

Wow, this is a great question that had my mind reeling with my own thoughts and beliefs.

I believe we are spiritual beings having a human experience. And as you said, part of being human is having flaws. Hmmmm… “flaws” seems to be a loaded word.

When I looked up “flaw” in Dictionary.com, I saw the loaded definition:

a feature that mars the perfection of something.

What would that feature be in your eyes? As humans my assumption is, in fact, that we are perfect. Perfectly human. Flaws do not seem to fit into the definition of human. May I suggest a more positive thought as “accepting oneself as humanly human.” I just like the ring to that…

What is coming up for me when I think of your question is:

When you decide to “unravel your knots,” what brings you to want to expend the energy to do that?

I think when you answer my question, you will find out the answer to your question.

Most of the time, we do decide to be okay with who we are. We continue our life as it is. A life constantly analyzed would be extremely draining. So, we live day to day with our unknowns, our misunderstandings and our unenlightened behaviors, (dealing with the word unenlightened is a whole other Ask Rain!) Something happens that brings us to the attention of one issue, (for example: we take what other people say personally.)

Why did it come to your attention? Did someone say something to you? Did it cause you suffering? For some reason, this suffering has gotten your attention as something you don’t want to deal with anymore. So you may begin a course in self-care, coaching, counseling, and/ or self-analysis. Once you have pinpointed the part of you that you wish to update, you make that your challenge. Once you feel you have done what you can, you can go back to living life as it is, while being okay with who you are.

I believe it is better to continue to live and learn while accepting yourself as

perfectly humanly human…

smiles and inspiration!
